 DMU

circa 1982

Set: 126403

Recently withdrawn Swindon Intercity DMUs were boarded up (due to asbestos contamination) and dumped at Falkland Yard - a short distance from their former home of Ayr Depot - prior to transport to Meyer Newman (Snailwell) for scrapping. Sc51033 was withdrawn from service 3/1982. The Swindon Diesel Preservation Society received permission to remove parts from these units for the preserved Class 126 unit as long as we did not enter the vehicles or remove parts that would affect braking. Behind are two Cravens cars, 51476 and 51474, then Class 126 centre car 59394. Andrew McConnell.

Scrapper. Swindon Class 126 Trailer Sc59402 languishes at Falkland Yard (Down Side) adjacent to the beach. This is the corridor side, the compartments and lavatories were on the other side. Originally a Composite it was declassified to all Second and is shown as a TSL on the vehicle end, above the 'White Circle'. Withdrawn Swindon vehicles were stored here or at the former Co-op Coal Sidings to the south of Ayr station prior to component recovery, boarding up and onward rail transfer for scrap. Sunday 24 October 1982 alicia hartman.

 DMU

24th October 1982

Scrapper. Swindon DMSL Sc51029 (nearest) awaits its fate at Falkland Yard, Ayr. The DMBSL visible at the end of the next set is Sc51037, which was subsequently photgraphed. Railcar data suggests that the adjacent DMSL could then be Sc51015. Sunday 24 October 1982. alicia hartman.

 DMU

21st May 1983

Set: 105375

Although not officially withdrawn until September 1983 it is highly unlikey that Class 105 DMBS E51301 ever carried any more passengers as it sits vandalised in Falkland Yard, Ayr on the 21st May 1983. Attached to sister Class 105 DMBS E50384 together they had operated together for a short time as Ayr TMD unit 105375. Both vehicles eventually made the long one way journey to Mayer Newmans Yard in Snailwell, Cambridgeshire where they were scrapped in January and June 1984 respectively. Bob Woolnough.

Withdrawn in August 1982 having spent all it's working life at Ayr MPD there was just one more journey to make...to the firing tunnel at Snailwell Yard, Suffolk where she perished during November 1983. Bob Woolnough.

 DMU

circa July 1986

An image of a Class 08 passing Falkland Yard to the north of Ayr in mid-1986 but of interest are the sidings full of DMUs. There is a Class 107, two Class 120 DMBCs (the closest boarded up), a Class 116 set, and several Class 27s. Brian Ward.

Falkland Yard, Ayr, July 1986. The goods yard was packed full of Class 107 units sidelined due to driving axle problems and Class 27s - presumably stored waiting their final trip to Vic Berry's yard in Leicester for scrapping. A Class 104 in Blue Grey livery also appears. Andrew McConnell.
